Why This Matters to You

Cloud infrastructure is often treated as a purely technical subject — something developers handle while business owners focus elsewhere. This is a reasonable division of labour, but it creates a problem: infrastructure decisions have significant business implications around cost, reliability, security, and scale. If you do not understand the basics, you cannot meaningfully participate in those decisions.

This post is not a technical tutorial. It is a plain-language primer on the concepts that matter for business decision-making.

What "The Cloud" Actually Is

The cloud is, at its simplest, other people's computers — very large, very reliable computers owned by companies like Amazon (AWS), Google (GCP), and Microsoft (Azure) that you can rent by the hour or month.

Before cloud computing, companies that needed to run software had to buy physical servers, put them in a data centre, and manage them. This required significant upfront capital, long procurement lead times, and ongoing operational overhead. Cloud computing changed this: you can provision a server in minutes, scale it up or down based on demand, and pay only for what you use.

For most businesses building software today, the cloud is not an option — it is the default. The question is not whether to use the cloud, but how to use it well.

Key Concepts You Should Know

Servers and Compute

A server is a computer that runs your application. In the cloud, you rent virtual servers (called EC2 instances on AWS, Compute Engine on GCP, etc.). The size of the server — how much CPU and memory it has — determines how many users your application can serve simultaneously and how fast it responds.

One of the most common and expensive cloud mistakes is choosing servers that are either too large (wasting money) or too small (causing performance problems). A good infrastructure setup matches server size to actual demand, and scales automatically when demand spikes.

Databases

Your database is where all your application's data is stored. In the cloud, databases can be managed services (the cloud provider handles backups, updates, and failover) or self-managed (you run a database on a server you control). Managed databases cost slightly more but dramatically reduce operational risk and overhead — for most businesses, they are the right choice.

The critical question for databases is: what happens if it fails? A properly configured production database should have automatic backups, point-in-time recovery, and failover to a replica so that a hardware failure does not cause data loss or extended downtime.

Scaling

Scaling is the ability to handle more (or less) load. There are two kinds:

Vertical scaling: Making your server bigger — more CPU, more memory. Simple, but has limits and requires downtime.
Horizontal scaling: Adding more servers and distributing traffic between them. More complex to set up, but allows theoretically unlimited scale and no single point of failure.

For most early-stage applications, vertical scaling is sufficient. As you grow, horizontal scaling becomes necessary. The right infrastructure is designed with this transition in mind.

CDN (Content Delivery Network)

A CDN is a network of servers distributed around the world that caches your static content (images, CSS, JavaScript) and serves it from the location closest to each user. A user in Lagos gets content served from a nearby server, not from a data centre in Virginia. This dramatically improves load times for users far from your primary server location.

For any application with a global or multi-regional user base, a CDN is not optional — it is one of the highest-impact performance improvements available.

Environments

Professional applications run in multiple environments:

Development: On individual developers' computers. Fast iteration, no consequences if something breaks.
Staging: A replica of production used for testing before release. What you test here is what goes live.
Production: The live environment that real users interact with.

If your team is deploying directly from a developer's laptop to production, that is a serious risk. Changes should always go through staging first.

The Questions to Ask Your Technical Team

If you are working with developers on a cloud-hosted application, these are the questions worth asking:

What happens if our main server goes down? How quickly would the application recover?
How often are database backups taken, and how would we restore from one?
How do we deploy updates — is there a staging environment? Is there downtime during deployments?
How do we know when something is wrong before our users tell us?
What does our cloud bill look like, and what is it likely to be when we have 10× the current users?

You do not need to understand the technical details of the answers. But asking these questions, and getting clear answers, will tell you a great deal about the maturity of your infrastructure setup.
