The client wanted a credible alternative to Google Play: a store users could trust to install apps from, and a channel developers could publish to without Play's gatekeeping. That brief carried four hard problems.

Trust. Sideloaded APKs have a reputation for malware. Users needed proof that every app was safe before they tapped Install.
A full catalogue on day one. A new store with few apps feels empty. The client wanted familiar Play Store apps listed alongside directly hosted ones — without re-hosting files it had no rights to distribute.
Distribution of the store itself. Play's policies don't allow an app that installs other apps, so the ZBD Store app had to ship from its own website.
Heavy files at scale. APKs run from a few MB to hundreds of MB. Serving them through the application server would be slow and expensive.

Our approach

We designed ZBD Store as a hybrid marketplace with two kinds of listings, so the catalogue could grow fast while staying legally and technically clean.

Hosted apps. Developers register, verify their identity, and upload signed APKs through the developer portal. Every build is parsed, scanned and reviewed before it goes live, then downloaded directly from ZBD Store.
Play-listed apps. Popular apps such as YouTube, WhatsApp, Spotify and Google Maps appear with full listings — icon, rating, install count, category, package details — while the Install button hands off to Google Play. Users get one place to discover everything, and the client never redistributes files it doesn't own.
Direct distribution of the store app. The ZBD Store Android app (Android 6.0+) downloads straight from the website, the same route trusted stores like F-Droid use.
One backend, four surfaces. A single shared API powers the website, Android app, developer portal and admin dashboard, so data, permissions and business rules live in one place.

Technical highlights

The server decides; it never carries the bytes. APKs live in object storage behind a CDN. The backend checks permissions and issues short-lived signed URLs, so downloads are fast and app servers stay free for real work.
Chunked, resumable uploads. Large builds upload in parts (init, chunk, complete), so a dropped connection on a slow network doesn't mean starting over.
Automated APK inspection. On upload the backend reads the manifest — package name, version code, minimum SDK, permissions — and fills the listing automatically.
Signature pinning. Each package is tied to its developer's signing certificate. An update signed with a different key is rejected, which blocks hijacked or tampered builds.
Integrity and malware checks. Every file gets a SHA-256 checksum and a malware scan before review, which backs the "Verified Apps" promise on the homepage.
Role-based admin control. The super admin dashboard uses role-based access so moderators, reviewers and support staff each see only what they need.
SEO-ready listings. Every app has its own page with clean URLs and social preview tags, so listings rank and share well.

Results

ZBD Store is live at zbdstore.com, with the website, Android app and developer portal all in production.

A catalogue organised across 12 launch categories, from Social and Communication to Finance, Shopping and Food & Drink.
Hybrid listings in place: hosted APKs alongside Play-listed apps such as YouTube, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Spotify.
Self-serve developer onboarding, with registration, upload, analytics, review management and version control.
A store app distributed directly from the web, independent of Play Store approval.

Add real figures before publishing: apps published, registered developers, total downloads, average download speed or uptime, and a one-line quote from the client.
